- <p> DIED. Steve Rubell, 45, flamboyant co-founder of Studio 54,
- the trend setting Manhattan discotheque; of complications from
- hepatitis and septic shock; in New York City. During the late
- 1970s, when publicity-seeking celebrities like Andy Warhol,
- Liza Minnelli and Bianca Jagger flocked to Studio 54, Rubell and
- his longtime partner, Ian Schrager, were the kings of Manhattan
- night life. The party came to an end in 1979, when the two were
- convicted of tax evasion. After serving one-year prison terms,
- Rubell and Schrager started successful hotel ventures and a new
- Manhattan night spot, the Palladium.
